Tobol v Derry City

 

Good luck to Derry City in Kazakstan as they try and get through another round of the UEFA Conference League. Derry have faced such a long trip and will be hoping to get a positive result to take back to Ireland next week

It was disappointing that they were not allowed to play the second leg in Belfast, the IFA said yes, Linfield said yes, it was UEFA that said no. Playing the 2nd leg at Windsor Park would have been interesting given the history Derry has with Linfield and the IFA, but UEFA rules wouldn't allow it
 
The idea of playing at Windsor Park make me think..What if Derry rejoined the Irish League? Wouldn't an All-Ireland football league be better than the current situation? Is a summer season or Friday night games really best for football in Ireland?
 
Playing the second leg in Dublin puts Derry at a major disadvantage in the tie and it takes away from the enjoyment of reaching this stage of the competition. It is a pity that the 2nd leg can't be staged in Derry or at least closer to Derry. There are a few GAA grounds in the North with the required number of seats but I suppose it's not the GAA's job to bail out football. It's a pity in my view that the sporting bodies in Ireland don't work closer together for the benefit of all.
 
It seems unfair too that teams from weaker leagues have to go through a number of qualifying rounds until they get to meet teams from the big leagues. UEFA are only really interested in the big teams, the Champions League, where the money is.
 
And so to the game. A draw or even a narrow defeat will be seen as a positive result. 0-0, 1-1, something like that would be great.

Israel - Palestine. My view

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex one. It's origins lie in a British government declaration in 1917 to set-up a Jewish state in Palestine    Key words for me in the text are these: "it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine",   After the First World War the British controlled Palestine and from then, but particularly from the the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, the Palestinian have been losing land. Israel didn't just cleanse Palestinians in 1948, when it was founded as a Western colonial project, and again under cover of a regional war in 1967. DON'T STOP TALKING ABOUT PALESTINE

 Some people may ask, why am I still writing about it, talking about it?   I wish I didn't have to. I wish we were not witnessing an ongoing genocide. I am so consumed with a mix of feelings, anger, despair, digust. How can Israel get away with their crimes in Gaza and the West Bank? Why haven't they been reigned in? Is the international community so toothless? So afraid of the United States and Trump's tarrifs? Afraid of big business?  There is a conserted effort to silence any opposition, any criticism of Israel's genocide, in the USA, the UK and elsewhere, I am proud that my country, Ireland,  is taking some kind of a stand but it is not enough. Restrcting trade with and arms sales to Israel should have happened years ago. Israeli diplomats should be expelled from every country on he planet. A genocide is ongoing, people are being deliberately starved, shot while they queue for food, and the world watched on. DON'T STOP TALKING ABOUT PALESTINE
