Another day of shame for the police here in Peru as students are attacked.

Another day of shame for the police here in Peru as students are attacked in their university campus

There has been protests against the president Dina Boularte who came to power last month after former president Pedro Castillo was impeeched. Protests across Peru which have been going on since early December have claimed close to 50 lives.

The presidential election of 2021 saw Castillo, who is popular in much of Peru but not in Lima finish ahead of right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori. Her supporters, similar to Donald Trump and Brazils's Jair Bolsonaro, have always contested the outcome of the election despite international observers agreeing that it was free and fair.

Castillo's time in office was turbulant. He had his enemies in parliament who have tried to oust him several times, finally succeeding on 7th December 2022 after he tried to close the parliament in a failed self-coup.

There have been protests going on since 7th December in provincial towns and cities against Dina Boularte's succession to power without any democratic mandate. The police have been heavy-handed throughout treating poor country folk more harshly than they would affluent city dwellers.

In my case the protests don't change my life so much. It just means that I didn't have to travel into work on Thursday and Friday and worked online instead. (It’s an ill wind that doesn't blow someone a good turn). Many people are facing a lot of hardship however.

  1. Cierto a ti o a mi estas protestas no afectan 100%nuestras vidas. Pero debemos ser empaticos por la gente que si necesita ser escuchada y que se atienda sus reclamos
